What Is the Difference Between Spyware and Adware?
Adware
started out as a legitimate form of software and advertising. If
people did not want to pay for a particular program a company would
offer an "adware" version either for free or discounted from the
original price. This program would run advetisements through
either ads within the software or pop up ads on your desktop.
Typically the advertisements would stop if you either uninstalled
the software or bought the regular version. Unfortunately,
as this form of software became more popular, developers
discovered they could implement other methods to recoup development
costs and increase their revenue. They began to track your
surfing habits and would send targeted ads based on the websites you
visited. This new style of adware or spyware, would also install new programs on your system without your knowledge or disguise themselves as a non-dangerous software and trick you into downloading it. The
worst happened when spyware would start stealing confidential
information like credit card numbers, social secutity numbers, and
passwords. They started accessing peoples bank accounts and using
their credit cards. This is why identity fraud is the single biggest
security risk on the internet today. The
line between adware and spyware has been blurred. It is now
extremely hard to tell the difference between non malicious adware and
spyware. There is really no reason to have either on your
computer. All it does at best is cause minor annoyances.
At worst it can destroy your computer and steal your identity.
